April 2010

Well...I'm going back to April before the twins were born.....

I have been going to the dr. twice a week for several weeks now. My apt on Tuesdays are just ultrasounds and on Fridays I have an ultrasound and dr. apt. Well on the 16th I went in everything normal. Getting pretty swollen by now and just really becoming uncomfortable. I was going to ask the dr. to take me out of work the following Friday on the 23rd. I wanted to make it to the 23rd because we were going on a field trip and I wanted to make it because I knew another teacher from our team wasn't going to be there. But Dr. Edwards had another thought. He couldn't believe I was still working! He pulled me out of work and actually sent me to the hospital. Once I got there we found out I was having contractions every 4 minutes but my cervix wasn't dilating so I got stuck on meds to stop the contractions and was sent home on Sunday. Went to work on Monday just to get stuff ready for the sub since I didn't have anything ready. I took it easy that next week, went to my apt on Tuesday and Friday and again...they stuck me back in the hospital. I told the dr. I wasn't going unless they were going to deliver me. Started crying..the whole bit! Needless to say he won and I went and he didn't deliver me!
They decided they wanted me to have another Echo and go from there - they were worried about my heart, all of the swelling and shifting of fluids after I delivered. So I had the Echo and they wanted a cardiac surgeon to look at the echo to see if I was going to have a procedure done on my heart before I deliver. Well needless to say the computer systems crashed and the surgeon never got the scans so they have to deliver them on Monday and he finally cleared me so they set me up to deliver on Tuesday the 27th.
I wasn't able to eat since dinner the night before or drink anything that really annoyed me but whatever. The nurse snuck me some ice chips :) The next morning came and we got going an hour later than normal but hey it was FINALLY going to happen today. They took me to the OR and got me ready to go. Everything was good until they went to put the arterial line in. It was horrible. The poked every artery in both arms. Finally I asked them to stop because it hurt so badly. They didn't like that so they gave me something to calm me down.
Meanwhile because they are giving me the medicine slowly and we are over an hour behind schedule my dr. needs to leave so he calls another dr. out of his conference to deliver me. Neither dr. was very happy about this but my dr. was presenting so couldn't really miss it. The new Dr. started cutting me open and I guess forgot to tell me. Emrys was sitting next to me and asked if I was going to sleep through their birth - remember they gave me "calming meds" yah put me to sleep.
Then I heard Kellan (baby A) cry it was 12:51 and then Kole (baby B) at 12:52. They cleaned the babies up and brought the over so I could see them. Both teams took the boys away to clean them off and warm them back up. Both boys had trouble breathing so needed some assistance. Emrys went right with the boys while they sewed me up. I guess Kole stopped breathing but they got him going again. Both boys went to the NICU and I went to ICU.
They wanted me in ICU to watch the shift in fluids and make sure my heart was going to do okay through everything. The boys went to the NICU for breathing and then eating. Kellan did great right away and it took Kole a little longer. Kellan ended up in the NICU for 12 days coming home on Mothers Day and Kole spend 11 days, coming home right before Mothers Day. Regardless it was a great Mother's Day present to have all my children with me happy and healthy.
